Inner Mongolia and Beijing

The 2018 edition of World Youth Choir (WYC) saw 64 singers from 33 counties tour China in July, under the directorship of Helene Stureborg and Jonathan Velasco.

Following intense rehearsal sessions, the two week tour took the WYC around Inner Mongolia and Beijing. The choir began the tour with its opening concert in Erdos, and the Great Theatre, before travelling to Hohhot for performances at the Inner Mongolia Normal University Concert Hall and the Inner Mongolia National Art Theatre Concert Hall. Whilst in Hohhot the WYC had the honour of appearing for three nights at Inner Mongolia China International Choral Week at the Wulan Theatre. The final stop in Inner Mongolia saw the WYC perform in Baotou at the Baotou Theatre.

The second week of the tour took the WYC to Beijing to perform at the 14th China International Chorus Festival. Here the choir appeared at the Chenxing Concert Hall of Beijing University, the Beijing Concert Hall and the Concert Hall of China National Traditional Orchestra (in a concert with the Argentine Arturo Beruti Choir).

The 2018 WYC was comprised of 64 singers from 33 countries, selected at the international jury meeting in Tianjin, China, in March 2018, when the representatives of the three patron organisations (IFCM, ECA-EC and JMI), together with the conductors of the session, selected the best singers from nearly 200 candidates.

Conductors Helene Stureborg (Sweden) and Jonathan Velasco (Philippines) directed the 2018 WYC through a repertoire of Nordic and European choir music from the 20th century, Asian folk and popular music.
