As the European Commission prepares to release its first proposal for the EU’s next long-term budget (2028–2034), over 800 cultural professionals and 479 organisations from 40 countries are raising their voices in support of a vital cause: safeguarding and strengthening the Creative Europe programme.
JMI stands with Culture Action Europe and hundreds of other cultural sector organisations in demanding that Creative Europe remain a standalone, fully-funded EU programme.
Despite its impact, Creative Europe currently receives only 0.2% of the EU budget — just €2.44 billion over seven years — while the cultural and creative sectors contribute significantly to Europe’s economy and social cohesion. Research shows a return of €11 in GDP for every €1 invested.
It’s like watching a two-hour film and being shown only 15 seconds. Like slicing a cake into 500 pieces and offering artists just one. Like giving culture less than a day on the calendar.
We believe in a Creative Europe that is autonomous, accessible, diverse, and ambitious. One that supports artistic freedom, nurtures emerging professionals, and reaches communities across the continent.
This is a crucial moment for Europe’s cultural future. We urge our community to join us in amplifying this message and signing the open letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
