Colombian Musician-Activist Triumphs over Injustice

Jota Ramos (Jhon Javier Ramos Laurido) is a passionate artist and social leader who has dedicated his life to using his artistic talents to bring about positive change in his community through his artistic collective Haga Que Pase (Make It Happen). With a deep-rooted commitment to social justice and a powerful creative voice, Jota—a Fair Play Ambassador—has become an inspiration to many as he fearlessly tackles pressing issues through his music. Despite facing numerous challenges, including death threats and entry into Amnesty International's protection program, and most recently, a harrowing 15-month legal battle following his wrongful arrest on drug trafficking charges in March 2023, Jota recently won a significant battle: he now walks a free man.

A BRIEF OVERVIEW: WHAT HAPPENED?

On March 24, 2023, Jota Ramos was detained under questionable circumstances. What started as a routine evening out with friends quickly escalated into a nightmarish scenario once police arrived, falsely claiming that a plastic cooler with vacuum-packed bags of chicken breasts inside also contained illegal substances, culminating in his arrest on charges of drug trafficking. Despite his unwavering assertion of innocence and the lack of concrete evidence, Jota endured house arrest and a grueling legal battle that stretched over 15 months, including multiple hearings where the Colombian justice system failed to produce evidence linking him to any criminal activity. On June 25, 2024, a judge finally ruled in his favor, lifting all precautionary measures and granting him the freedom he long deserved.

FACING UP AND MOVING FORWARD

Following his release, Jota wasted no time in reconnecting with his life and passions. He spent time with his family, visited his farm, and took trips to Chocó, Cartagena, and Palenque de Benkos. These travels were part of the "Walking the Afro-Diaspora Memory" project, where he represented his foundation Haga Que Pase alongside other organizations.

Jota also resumed his role as a community leader and public speaker. After a long period without public appearances, he participated in a forum with young people at the Arnoldo Palacio Library in Quibdó, Chocó. There, he discussed his case and the broader challenges faced by dark-skinned individuals in a racist society. His story resonated deeply with participants, who shared their own experiences of discrimination.

Now back home, Jota is focused on planning for his safety and restoring the various projects he was developing before his detention. This includes his music, his farm, and the foundation.

CELDAS DEL OLVIDO: A POWERFUL REMINDER

As part of his return to music, Jota has just released a striking music video to his new song “Celdas del olvido” that perfectly encapsulates his ongoing fight against injustice. The video serves as a powerful and poignant depiction of the struggles faced by marginalized communities, particularly the unjust detention and discrimination of black individuals. With evocative visuals and profound lyrics, Jota confronts the harsh realities of violence and racial bias while advocating for urgent social change. The music video is not just a piece of art; it is a rallying cry that awakens consciences and invites viewers to join in the fight for equality and justice for all.

Through this release, Jota continues to use his platform to challenge societal wrongs, making clear that his journey for freedom was not only personal but part of a broader movement for social justice.

A CALL FOR CONTINUED SUPPORT

Jota Ramos is not just an artist; he embodies compassion, empathy, and resilience. Through his art and community efforts, he has become a symbol of hope, motivating others to overcome challenges and strive for a fairer, more just world.

Now that Jota has regained his freedom, it is essential that we continue to support him. By backing Jota, we send a strong message that artists and activists like him deserve recognition, protection, and the opportunity to advocate for change. Jota is at the forefront of the fight for artistic freedom and the right to express oneself without fear. Let us unite in his support, ensuring that justice is served and his voice remains a powerful force for positive transformation in Colombia and beyond.
